Sunlight over the 6th hole at Machrihanish Dunes on the Kintyre Peninsular

Kintyre Peninsular Golf trip

Choose Kintyre for a quieter and more remote side of Scottish links golf. The journey from Glasgow first takes you along the shores of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park before turning south onto the long and winding road down the Kintyre peninsula. Dramatic coastlines, empty roads and ever-changing scenery gradually unfold along the way, immediately setting the tone for pure links golf.

At Machrihanish Golf Club, the round begins with one of the most iconic opening shots in golf. The tee shot plays directly across the beach, often into a strong Atlantic wind. It is a spectacular start to a traditional links course where creativity, patience and control are constantly tested.

Alongside Machrihanish, you will also play Machrihanish Dunes, where fairways move naturally through vast dune landscapes and every bounce feels slightly unpredictable. At Dunaverty Golf Club, golf becomes simpler and quieter, with firm fairways, uninterrupted sea views and a setting that feels untouched by time.

Accommodation is available at either The Royal Hotel in the centre of Campbeltown or Ugadale Hotel beside the course at Machrihanish. Both provide a comfortable and relaxed base with easy access to the golf.

In and around Campbeltown, you can experience the region’s rich whisky heritage, small local pubs and understated charm. Here, golf, landscape and local culture still feel naturally connected.

Destination

Discover the mystique of Kintyre.

Kintyre offers a quieter, more remote side of Scottish links golf. The coastline is rugged, the air carries the scent of the sea and the wind is rarely absent. It is a landscape made for golf in its purest form.

At Machrihanish Golf Club, the opening tee shot is one of the most iconic in the game. You drive across the beach with the Atlantic on your left and the wind immediately in play. It is a start that demands commitment from the very first swing.

Machrihanish Dunes offers a completely different rhythm. Fairways flow naturally through towering dunes, lies are uneven and every bounce feels slightly unpredictable. Sheep roam freely across the site, maintaining the rough in the traditional way. The golf feels natural, raw and wonderfully unpolished.

Further south, Dunaverty Golf Club delivers a more traditional links experience. The layout is straightforward, the views stretch towards Ireland and the atmosphere is relaxed and understated.

For those looking to explore beyond the championship courses, Carradale Golf Club is a charming nine-hole course tucked between hills and coastline. The welcome is warm, the setting peaceful and the golf refreshingly simple.

Away from the fairways, Campbeltown remains one of Scotland’s great whisky towns. Small pubs, historic distilleries and a slower pace of life give the region its distinct character. Here, golf and local culture still feel closely connected.
